Who Believed in You Before the World Did?

We’ve all been there. You’re standing in front of the mirror, heart racing, finally seeing the person you were always meant to be. But then, the fear creeps in. You start wondering what "the world" will think.

When I say "the world," I’m not talking about billions of strangers across the globe. I’m talking about your world: your neighbors, your coworkers, the community you walk through every day, or the company you work for. Before the rest of the world catches up to your truth, there are the "foundation people." These are the mentors, the friends, and the allies who saw your light before you even had the courage to turn the dimmer switch up.

The Power of Foundation People

In the journey of a crossdresser or a trans woman, those first few believers are everything. They are the ones who didn't just "tolerate" your transition or your expression; they championed it. Maybe it was a spouse who helped you pick out your first pair of heels, or a mentor in the community who showed you that living authentically was actually possible.

These foundation people provide the psychological safety net we need to leap. They see the potential in us that we’re often too scared to acknowledge. If you’ve found those people, hold onto them tight. They are the architects of your confidence.

What if You Haven't Found Your Tribe Yet?

I hear from so many listeners on the My Girl Life Podcast who feel like they’re navigating this path entirely alone. If you don’t have those foundation people yet, don’t panic: but do start working on finding them.

The secret to finding people who believe in you isn't just "looking" for them; it’s about doing. The best way to attract believers is to lean into whatever makes you feel alive. What are you passionate about? What energizes you? Whether it’s fashion, advocacy, art, or simply mastering the perfect makeup routine, when you do something that energizes you, it creates a magnetic pull.

Enthusiasm is Infectious

There is something deeply attractive about a person who is lit up from within. When you pursue your passions with genuine enthusiasm, it becomes infectious. You’ll find that people: sometimes complete strangers: are suddenly motivated to help you succeed. They might not even have a personal stake in your journey, but they want to see you win simply because your energy is a joy to be around.

As Trans women and gender-fluid individuals, our joy is a form of activism. When we show up with high energy and a smile, we invite others to support us. Your enthusiasm can turn a casual acquaintance into a lifelong mentor.

Build Your Foundation Today

Don't wait for the whole "world" to give you permission to be yourself. Focus on the few. Find the mentors who have walked this path before and the friends who celebrate your milestones.

If you’re still searching, keep doing what you love. Your "people" are out there, waiting to be energized by your unique spark. Remember, every great building needs a foundation before it can touch the sky. Who is helping you build yours?

Join the conversation and find your community by listening to the latest episodes of the My Girl Life Podcast. We’re here to believe in you every step of the way!
